Trucks Stuck at the Kasumbalesa Border: A Logistics Logjam

Hundreds of trucks destined for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are currently experiencing major delays at the Kasumbalesa border crossing. These trucks have been stuck for more than a week due to severe traffic congestion at the border, leading to significant frustration for both drivers and transport companies.

This unforeseen situation has created a ripple effect in transport and trade, leaving drivers and businesses awaiting a resolution to this logistical bottleneck. What challenges lie ahead as they navigate this congestion, and how will it impact the flow of goods across borders?

To address the situation, border authorities have aimed to process around 350 trucks each day. However, achieving this target has been difficult given the ongoing traffic backlog. The congestion is largely due to the recent introduction of a new scanner at the Kanyaka checkpoint on the Kasumbalesa-Lubumbashi road in the DRC, which has significantly prolonged customs clearance times. Although this new scanning technology is designed to improve security and efficiency, it has resulted in bottlenecks that hinder the prompt movement of goods across the border.

As delays continue, many stakeholders are calling for a quick resolution to the border issues to enable smoother transportation and minimize the adverse effects on trade between Zambia and the DRC.
